The small country of Slovenia, population 2 million, was the first part of Yugoslavia to gain its independence. The Serb population was a tiny minority and the opposition of Belgrade manifested in some sporadic war declaration and after just several days of fighting, Slovenia seceded. But the country, with a strong Austrian tradition moved on a fast track and was able to join the European Union and NATO in the first wave. Driving through Slovenia you are not surprised by this choice, the country looking so similar with their northern neighbor. The countryside is charming with the enchanting town of Bled, the medieval center of Sfokia Loka, the famous painted chuch of Hrastovlje and the Slovenia jewel of the Adriatic, Piran. Ljublijana is a charm of a city. Small but very picturesque has a relaxed atmosphere, with lots of people sipping lazily drinks on the banks of Ljublijanica, the river the crosses the town. The castle on the hill , the cathedral with impressive bronze doors and the old pedestrian town completes the landscape. West of the town is the world renown Postojna Caves, where if you are not into caving is definetely worth it to visit for the only cave train ride in Europe, a 4 km RT at high speed through stalactites.
