MEXICO

The richness of archeological sites made Mexico to be known as “The Egypt of the Americas.” However, the comparison does not do justice to this fascinating and ancient country, which was home to civilizations such as the Olmecs, Toltecs, Zapotecs, Mixtecs, Aztecs, and Maya.

Besides this long history of peoples who lived and created here, the Spanish “Conquista” of the 16th century added a European influence. But even without the ruins built by this continuous stream of civilizations, Mexico would still be a charming and bon-vivant place.

To visit the country, you may need at least 4-5 hectic weeks of travel.

We were in Mexico four times. The first travel was in the Yucatan part of the Maya kingdom and civilization, Chichen Itza, Uxmal, and The Puuc Route being the main attractions. We visited Campeche, Villahermosa, and Palenque, reaching the fantastic city of San Cristobal de las Casas, returning from there to Tulum and Coba. Later, we visited Mexico City with the remarkable ruins of Teotihuacan, the picturesque and artistic city of Oaxaca, and the surrounding ruins of Mitla and Monte Alban, Porto Angelito, a charming fishing village on the Pacific Coast, Acapulco and returning through the silver mine town of Taxco. Again we went and visited El Tajin and Xalapa, the colonial Puebla and Cholula, the ruins of Xochicalco, the indigenous village of Patzcuaro, returning through Guanajuato, San Miguel de Allende, and Tula.
