SRI LANKA

Sri Lanka’s legendary culture and lush vegetation infuse the spirit of this land, wrapped in the smiles and the relaxed attitude of its people.

The heart of the country preserves a fantastic heritage in what is known today as the “Cultural Triangle”. The old capitals of Arunadapura and Polonnaruwa rest in this area and remain separated in time by more than 1000 years. In between the two cities also rests Mihintale, the cradle of Sinhalese Buddhism. Mahinda, the son of the great Indian king Ashoka, met the king of Lanka in 247 BC here, passing the knowledge of Buddha and converting Lanka to Buddhism.

Close by is Aukana, a city with the famous 35 meters tall Buddha, and Sigiriya, a fortified rock, used by kings for defense and by monks for meditation while at its southern side rests Kandy, a symbol of the country’s independence.

The hill stations around the tea plantations preserve the tradition of the venerated Ceylon tea, Adam’s Peak, where the legend says that Adam stepped on Earth, towers above all at 2,840 meters, remaining the most significant destination of pilgrimage throughout the country. Not far is Yala National Park proved to be a fascinating spectacle of wildlife.

The South is known for its with palm tree scattered beaches caressed by the warm water of the Indian Ocean. On welcoming waters, determined fishermen balancing on poles wait for the catch of the day. Galle, Tangalle, Mirissa, Unawatuna are just a few of the several famous towns which are by the beach.
