BELIZE
Belize is a young country with a long and complex history. The British interests in the region were in the logging industry. They made territorial exchanges with the Spaniards and established British Honduras in the 18th century.
Belize’s population, just around 300000 people, is a mix of Latinos and Blacks. Many of them live in the South and are descendants of runaway slaves from St Vincent. At its independence, the country adopted the British systems of laws and English as its primary language, but nowadays there are 53% Spanish speaking people that threatened this language inheritance.
Most of the country is covered by jungle, and as a logical result, the government tries to promote it as an eco-destination, but the only thing that is well associated with the country is the diving and snorkeling in the Caribbean in the “cayes”, with Caye Caulker and Caye Ambergris- Isla Bonita, the better known.
Otherwise, the country was part of the Maya empire, its ruins peppering its jungle around Caracol and St Ignatio.
