PUERTO RICO
“Puerto Rico is my best treasure and all my enemies try to take it from me,” said once King Philip II of Spain. The Spaniards conquered Puerto Rico in 1539 and fought to keep it for almost 400 years. Meanwhile, the Brits and the Dutch tried to take it over several times, and even if they succeeded momentarily they had to abandon it. Many corsairs and privateers, among which Drake was the most well-known failed to conquered the island. So in order to preserve the treasure, the Spaniards built a lot of reinforcements on the islands out of which Castillo de San Cristobal on the north coast of San Juan and Castillo San Felipe El Morro on its tip are the most foreboding.
But beside the charming San Juan Puerto Rico has many beutiful places. From the bioluminscnce bays in La Parguera, to Cabo Rojo, the charnming city of Ponce, the tropical forest of Yunque, the two remarkable laid back islands of Culebra and Vieques and it entire north coast full of beaches alll the way to Rincon and the caves from Arecibo.
