ENGLAND
London looks and feels like an imperial city with its collection of museums, galleries, monuments, and Victorian architecture. The British world dominance may have waned, but the sentiment is still there in the capital, like in the old days when the British power ruled the globe.
London’s world-class exhibits, its serene parks, the pleasant strolls on the Thames’ embankments, or the craziness of the Soho life all compete for the visitor’s attention. The old cabs, designed for the Victorian ladies, the red phone and post office booths are as British as the traditional pubs filled with drinkers chatting till late evening hours.
Outside the big metropolis, the green fields stretch towards Windsor, the official residence of the Queen, and the small town of Eton with its famous college. On the western side of the country is Bath with its elegant architecture in the Georgian style and the Roman bath built about 2000 years ago. On the way to Bath, it’s Stonehenge, “the stones that hand in the air” created by an unknown civilization. Close to London are the university cities of Oxford and Cambridge with their spectacular forest of spires and crowds of students filling their streets. The Warwick Castle and the birthplace of William Shakespeare in Stratford upon Avon are spectacular stops on the way.
